About me
Welcome! I am Becca Marcus, an English teacher and admissions professional who has found joy in classrooms and admissions departments in various institutions. I graduated with a Bachelor's in English from Barnard College of Columbia University, where I also served as a senior interviewer and fellow in their admissions department. I graduated with a Master's in Secondary English Education from Teacher's College of Columbia University.
I have worked in the admissions offices of independent day schools, boarding schools, and colleges. I have been a high school English teacher and application essay coach for almost 10 years. In 2019, I was awarded the Apgar Award for Excellence in Teaching by Blair Academy. I have taught all levels of high school English, from 9th grade foundations all the way through AP level courses. I also coach rowing and do have experience counseling students through the college athletics recruiting process.
About my Approach
My work, whether through independent writing coaching, in the classroom setting, or as an admissions professional, has taught me that there is no single approach to getting the absolute most out of each and every student's potential. A student is more able to project who he/she is as genuinely as possible with a guide who seeks to help a student express his/her thoughts, desires, and opinions - on the student's terms.
My essay and application coaching is centered around compassion, patience, and enthusiasm in order to make overwhelming or difficult writing endeavors feel natural and (dare I say) fun.
The Mission
All students deserve to have the opportunity to access a caring approach to learning and to be treated as individuals as they learn, grow, and strive to become the best that they can be. My goal is to allow students from diverse backgrounds to reach the highest levels of success, through both personal and objective metrics - pro bono, for those who cannot afford it. I am always looking to help driven, eager young people of varied means by referral.
